Dear Dharma Friends,

Hope everyone is keeping yourselves well and safe during this challenging time.

The 8th of 4th Lunar Month is the Birthday of Shakyamuni Buddha. In 1950, the World Fellowship of Buddhists has chosen the full moon day of May (15th of 4th Lunar Month) as the Vesak Day, in commemoration of the birth, enlightenment and parinirvana of Shakyamuni Buddha.

This world is full of sufferings. Through his practice and enlightenment, the Buddha pointed out the causes of suffering and showed us the path to liberation and peace. Speech, action and thoughts that stem from greed, hatred and ignorance lead to suffering. Kind and wholesome words, conducts and mind bring happiness and peace.

The Buddha’s appearance in this world brought us brightness, hope and warm. On this auspicious day of the Buddha, may everyone remember the gratitude and teachings of the Buddha, put the teachings into practice, purify our conducts and thoughts, hence attain peace and ease in our body and mind.

More importantly, may everyone learn the aspiration of the Buddha, strengthen our Bodhi Mind, cultivate wisdom, loving kindness and compassion, benefiting oneself and others, may all beings attain Buddhahood.

While staying at home during this special time, may all diligently recollect the virtues of the Triple Gem and  recite the Sutra on the Buddha’s Bequeathed Teaching and the Eight Realisations of Great Beings

Through sincerity in chanting, recollection and paying respect, lets dedicate merits to everyone,

May everyone and members of your family be well, healthy and peaceful,

May all diseases and disasters cease,

May the society and world be peaceful

【Sutra on the Eight Realisations of Great Beings】

🌼🌸🌺💮🏵️🌼🌸🌺🏵️🌼🌸🌺🏵️

Translated by Shramana An Shi Gao in the Latter Han Dynasty

Wholeheartedly, day and night, a disciple of the Buddha should recite and contemplate on the eight realisations awakened by the mahasattvas, the great beings.

THE FIRST REALISATION is the awareness that the world is impermanent. All political regimes are subject to fall; all things composed of the four elements are empty and contain the seeds of suffering. Human beings are composed of five aggregates and are non-self. They are always in the process of change, constantly rise and fall. They are empty of self and without sovereignty. The mind is the source of all defilements, and the body the forest of all unwholesome deeds. If we contemplate on these facts, we can gradually be released from samsara, the cycle of birth and death.

THE SECOND REALISATION is the awareness that more desire brings more suffering. All hardship in daily life arise from greed and desire. Those with little desire and ambition are able to relax; their bodies and minds are free from entanglement.

THE THIRD REALISATION is that the human mind is always searching for possessions and never feels fulfilled. This causes unwholesome actions to ever increase. Bodhisattvas however, always remember the principle of having few desires. They live a simple life in peace in order to practice the path and consider the realisation of perfect wisdom as their only career.

THE FOURTH REALISATION is the awareness of the extent to which indolence is an obstacle to practice. For this reason, we must practice diligently to transform the unwholesome mental factors which bind us, and to conquer the four kinds of Mara, in order to free ourselves from the prisons of the five aggregates and of the three planes.

THE FIFTH REALISATION is the awareness that ignorance is the cause of the endless cycle of birth and death. Therefore, bodhisattvas always remember to listen and learn in order to develop their understanding and eloquence. This enables them to educate living beings and bring them to the realm of great joy.

THE SIXTH REALISATION is the awareness that poverty creates hatred and anger, which creates a vicious cycle of negative thoughts and activity. When practicing generosity, bodhisattvas consider everyone, friends and enemies alike, as equal. The do not condemn anyone’s past wrong-doings, nor do they hate those who are presently causing harm.

THE SEVENTH REALISATION is that the five categories of desire lead to difficulties/sufferings. Although we are in the mundane world, we should try not to be caught up in worldly matters. A monk, for example, has in his possession only three robes and one bowl. He lives simply in order to practice the path. His precepts kept him free of attachment to worldly things, and he treats everyone equally and with compassion.

THE EIGHT REALISATION is the awareness that the fire of birth and death is raging, causing endless suffering. We should initiate the great vow to help everyone, to suffer with everyone, and to guide all beings to the realm of great joy.

These eight realisations are the awakenings of great beings, buddhas and bodhisattvas who have diligently practiced the path of compassion and wisdom. They have sailed the Dharmakaya boat to the shore of nirvana, but then they return to the ordinary world to help and guide sentient beings. They use these eight realisations to help all beings to recognize the suffering in this world, hence, abandon the five desires and direct their minds and hearts toward the noble path. If the disciples of the Buddha recite these eight realisations and contemplate on them, they will put an end to countless misunderstanding and afflictions, and progress towards enlightenment, leaving behind the world of birth and death, dwelling forever in peace.
